Žagarė 1924
This is a Russian new year's postcard locally used in 1924 within the town of Žagarė. I know the card is not in perfect shape but I bought it anyway because it is damaged in a right way which gives somehow an authenticity of the antiqueness. I'm not sure how to describe it exactly. Žagarė is definitely not a big town so it is in a way unusual to see a locally used card. But why use a new year card on 29th of February? hm... beats me... I know that the Russians used to celebrate new year in January 17 (or are they still?) according to the Gregorian calender but still there is a big gap between February 29.

Klaipėda 1906
This is a beautiful embossed new year greeting postcard used on 1st of January 1906 within the city of Memel (now Klaipėda, Lithuania). The minimum 3 Pfennig franking is surprisingly not so easy to find according to my experience.

Palanga 1912
A German made art postcard using very fine paper sent in 1912 from Поланген/Polangen (now Palanga, Lithuania) during the Imperial Russian rule. The beach in the artwork is probably not Palanga but it matches because it is famous for its beach! Palanga's appearance in historic source is surprisingly old. A German Tutonic chronicle mentions that King Valdemar I of Denmark captured a castle of Curonian tribe in Palanga in 1161, but historical fact shows us that unlike Tallinn, it wasn't a full scale invasion and the Danes had no intention to stay there to claim its territorial possession.

The 2nd Białystok-Vilnius Philatelic Exhibition 1982
This is a postcard of the II Wystawa Filatelistyczna Białystok - Wilno (2nd Białystok-Vilnius Philatelic Exhibition) held in 1982 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the ZSRR/USSR (it is the polish abbreviation for: Związek Socjalistycznych Republik Radzieckich). It features a very nice illustration of Gediminas tower in Vilnius with a Commemorative cancel.

Jieznas 1972
This another illustrated Soviet stationery sent in 1972 from Езнас/Jieznas. A tourist facility of Бирштонас/Birštonas is illustrated on the envelope. Jieznas is a small town with a population of approximately 1500. This town has been mentioned in historical records for the magnificent palace of the Pac family but unfortunately, it has been burnt down by a fire in 19th century. Only a white baroque church remains today from that period.
Daugailiai 1970
This is one of the series of illustrated Soviet stationery sent in 1970 from Даугайляй/Daugailiai, a village in Utena county with a population of 350. The illustration depicts a sanatorium in Друскининкай/Druskininkai. I like those illustration series of the Soviet stationery, especially the ones in the 60's and 70's.

Kapčiamiestis 1912
Копцıово/Koptsiovo (now Kapčiamiestis, Lithuania) |
This is a Christmas card sent in 1912 from Копцıово / Koptsiovo (spelled Kopciowo in Polish, now Kapčiamiestis, Lithuania), Сув/Suv (Suvalki Gubernia). Копцıово can also be spelled Копциово in modern Russian. It is interesting that this card is written by a French woman to her relative in Cracovie, French name for Kraków, Poland. I do not know if it is a French woman who married a Polish man or the family itself is all French. Her husband seems to be a director in a bank in Łomża, Poland.

Vilnius 1967
A women's day greetings sent in 1967 from Vilnius to Šaukėnai. Šaukėnai is a village in Kelmė distrcit with a population of little over 700. There is a nice arrival cancellation. Artwork is by L.Ramonienė. Lithuania postcard designs are surprisingly very nice especially during the 50's and 60's.

Švepeliai (Klaipėda) 1970
Here is a commemorative cover of the centennial of the birth of Lenin, sent from Klaipėda post office #11(11-asis paštas) located in Švepeliai, now part of Klaipėda municipality. Švepeliai was called Schweppelen in german and used to be one of the villages surrounding Memel. Unfortunately, Soviet cancellations do not contain the name of the municipal district, in this case, it just states the name of the post office Клайпеда 11/Klaipėda 11. The cover design is surprisingly nice, containing the image of the town of Ulyanovsk (now Simbirsk, Russia), the native town of Lenin near the Volga river.

Vilnius 1960
It is a commemorative cover of the 20th anniversary of Lietuvos Tarybų Socialistinė Respublika/Литовская Советская Социалистическая Республика (Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic) with the on-topic stamp. There's a price on the back and it costs suprisingly 10 kopecks! Although it's a propaganda cover, i personally like the art work. On the lower right corner of the illustration, there seems to be a signature of the artist but it's unfortunately unreadable..
