Švenčionėliai 1916

This is a German military field post (Feldpost) card sent in 1916 from Novo Svenziany (Švenčionėliai, Lithuania) to Chateau Salins in Lothringen, Germany (now Lorraine, France). Švenčionėliai was nothing more than couple of houses until the Tsarist authority built a railroad linking Vilnius and Saint Petersburg. The present Švenčionėliai station was build for the town of Švenčionys but because of the distance of 10 Km, a small sub-town started to grow around the station which eventually became "Novo Svenziany", the New Švenčionys.

From what I can see here, it looks like the picture was taken at the intersection of Priestočio g. and Švenčionių g looking to the west. It seems like "Svenziany Str." hasn't changed the name and Priestočio g. is more like a square rather a street like you see on the picture.

You certainly won't see this sign in present Švenčionėliai:

"Horse wagon, do not stop here"

Arrival cancellation of Уцяны / Utsyany (Utena)

This is a very nice registered cover sent in 1902 from  Оникшты / Onikshty (now Anykščiai, Lithuania), Ковен. г./Kovenskaya Guberniya (Kaunas Gubernia) to Уцяны/Utsyany (now Utena, Lithuania) also in the same Kaunas Gubernia. There is also a railway postmark (Почтовыи вагон/Pochtovyi vagon) of the line No.201 running from Ново-Свенцяны / Novo-Sventsyany (Švenčionėliai) to ПоневѢж / Ponevezh (Panevėžys), which stopped at both, Anykščiai an Utena. 

Švenčionėliai 1916, 1917

A fieldpost card sent from the Soldatenheim in Novo-Svenziany/Nowoswenzjany, now Švenčionėliai in Lithuania in 1916. It was sent by the Soldatenheim in Nowoswenzjany where you can see the seal on the back, from the fieldpost station 270 which was stationed in Švenčionėliai at the time. Soldatenheim was an officer club when soldiers could have a leisure time when they were off duty.




This is also a postcard of Švenčionėliai taken in at railway station. Unfortunately, the fieldpost station used is unknown.

Švenčionėliai 1942, 1944

Today Im posting 2 covers from Schwentschionellen, now called Švenčionėliai, a town in the north eastern part of present Lithuania. Both posted during the Nazi occupation from the Dienstpost Ostland of Schwentschionellen. There were 3 different postal systems operating at that time in Lithuania, Feldpost which was an exclusive service for the military personels, Dienstpost and the local post. The service of the Dienstpost in the occupied territories was open to civilians but generally reserved to german nationals or the foreigners working for a german authority. Ostland was the german occupation authority in the Baltic region and had its own Dienstpost.


The first one is a registered cover to Glogau, known today as Głogów, Poland. 3 stamps are used here, two of them overprinted "Ostland". Listed Ostland Nr. 10 in Michel, those were Ostland's own stamps. Dienstpost Ostland used both stamps, the ones with the overprints and the ones without. The total of the 3 stamps is 42 Pfennig, according to the postal rates of a registered inland letter at that time (1942), it is correctly franked.



The second cover is also a registered one correctly franked with 42 Pfennig, posted to Vienna, Austria in 1944. As you can see from the Nazi seal here, the service of the Dienstpost was also used by military personels. Both covers have an arrival cancellation on the back of the envelope.
