The capitals of the E.U. member states: Vilnius 2005

A very nice looking FDC and the stamp issued by Poland in 2005 as one of the series of the capital cities of the European Union member states. The design of the FDC cover is especially nice! Curiously, a stamp depicting the Wilno/Vilnius cathedral with similar angle has also been issued by Poland during the prewar occupation period as well.

Trakai 2011

This is a FDC of one of the 2 stamps of the church series issued in 2011. The church on the stamp is the Church of the Visitation of Saint Mary/Švč. Mergelės Marijos Apsilankymo bažnyčia in Trakai, originally build in 1409 by Vytautas the Great. The basic gothic features of the building itself are still preserved but the exterior has been redecorated in Baroque style. You can also see the church on the lower left picture of the postcard. Nice arrival cancellation of Vilnius 38 which is Naujininkai.

Kaunas 2008

To be honest, I find pretty refreshing to see a modern postcard on this blog. I think I should do this once in a while. Well, this is a FDC postcard sent in 2008 from Kaunas to Vilnius with a nice stamp commemorating the 75th anniversary of Darius & Girėnas's flight cancelled with a first day postmark. Darius & Girėnas are the Lithuanian version of the Wright brothers, who successfully flew from New York to Europe across the Atlantic ocean in 1933. However, they couldn't make it to Kaunas due to an accident somewhere in Poland. You can see their plane "Lituanica" on both stamp and postmark. If you ever have a chance to visit Lithuania, these 2 guys are pretty hard to miss, not only they are on the 10 Litas banknote but literally everywhere in any form, for example street names, school names, memorials or even in some restaurant menu like "D&G steak" or "Cocktail Lituanica", not to mention that they are a major "stamgast" topic of the trans-atlantic airmail covers.

Šiauliai 2011

A FDC of the 2011 issue of the religious architecture series cancelled in Šiauliai. It depicts the cathedral of Ss. Peter and Paul in Šiauliai. The original wooden church built in 1445 was remodeled in late gothic-renaissance mixed style in 1626 and acquired the present appearance.

Alytus 2011

This is a FDC of the commemorative stamps of Alytaus kraštotyros muziejus (Alytus regional museum) cancelled in Alytus on 04/06 2011. The first day cancellation depicts the wooden statue of saint John of Nepomuk which the museum owns. John of Nepomuk was a Czech saint (called Jan Nepomucký in Czech) popular in Lithuania during the Catholic counter-reformation period, depicted in numerous places throughout the country including the coat of arms of Anykščiai.

Vilnius ATM stamp 1995

This is a FDC of an ATM stamp canceled in Vilnius in 1995 and the stamp itself. It is the first and the only of it's kind ever issued in Lithuania. Minimum value is 1.40 Litas and maximum is 4.00 Litas.

Kretinga 2010

This is a FDC (first day cover) of the stamps commemorating the 75th anniversary of Kretinga museum in 2010. The museum is located in the former Tiškevičius (Tyszkiewicz in polish) family manor.

Šiauliai 1990

This is a registered cover sent from Šiauliai in 1990 to Prague/Praha, Czechoslovakia (Czechoslovakia cease to exist on 31st of december 1992). The stamps are the first series of the newly independent republic of Lithuania. In Šiauliai, Soviet stamps were still in use for awhile after independence but an inscription "Lietuvos Republikos PAŠTAS" was added instead. Other locations also put "Lietuvos Republikos PAŠTAS" with a variaty of their own postmarks or adding it in a machine cancellations. Provisional postmarks were often used to cancel stamps. In this case, it has been made out of old Soviet postmark by simply erasing everything except "Šiauliai" and the date.


This registered cover was sent in may 1990, before the issue of the first series in october, therefore using Soviet stamps.

Panevėžys 1965

This is a postally unused FDC of the commemoration for the 25th anniversary of the LTSR (Soviet Socialist Republic of Lithuania), cancelled in Panevėžys/Паневежис in 1965. It has 2 stamps, on the right, The CCCP (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) stamp of the 25th anniversary of the LTSR, on the left, its the stamp overprinted, issued for LTSR in 1940, the year of the first Soviet occupation before the german invasion. Lithuania has been re-occupied by the Soviet Union after WWII in 1945.

Šiauliai 1986

3 registered covers posted from Šiauliai/Шяуляй to Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1986. All 3 covers use commemorative envelope (the 1st one with 5Kopeks value stamp inprinted, sold through out the Soviet Union, the 2 others, without inprinted value, was sold only locally within Lithuania SSR) of 750th anniversary of the city of Šiauliai, as well as the commemorative stamps and the First day cancellation. After WW2, Lithuania was incorporated to the USSR as the "Soviet Socialist Republic of Lithuania".
Acquired in 2004 in Prague, Czech Republic.
