It has been long since I have posted something here the last time I guess.. I'm planning to slowly come back on track!

Anyway.. So, here is a registered cover sent in 1942 from Heydekrug (today Šilutė, Lithuania) to Kassel in mainland Germany. 1942 is in the middle of WWII as we all know and Heydekrug / Šilutė has been re-annexed by Germany along with the rest of Memelland. I guess the followers of this blog know that but let me mention it just in case if you happened to be new to this blog..

The sender's address is in Kolleschen (previously called Kolletzischken) b. Jonaten, a small village not far from the narrow-gauge line Heydekrug - Jonathen (or Jonaten). I wonder if the sender was working or just happened to be in Heydekrug to send this letter because there were closer post offices from where he was living, notably Jonathen.
I bought this cover at Yahoo Japan with a ridiculous price of 500 JPY (4.50USD or 4.30EUR) along with a Tilsit and a Skaisgirren cover (which I'm not going to post here because those are not part of Lithuania but part of present Russia) buried among hundreds of German covers. Regular dealers don't usually notice Memelland covers unless Memel stamps are used on it.

This is cover sent in 1943 from Moscheiken (now Mažeikiai, Lithuania), Ostland to Riga, the present Latvian capital. It has been sent from a Bahnsleiter (station director) of Mažeikiai station (as you see on the back of the cover) to a Reichsbahninspektor (Reich Railway inspector) in Riga. The postmark cancelling the Ostland overprint says Moscheiken, the official German name of Mažeikiai in Ostland, but what surprised me was the Nazi cachet that says "Bahnhof Mazeikiai" and NOT Moscheiken. As you can see from the fact that the station director uses himself the name of Mažeikiai on the back, the use of Lithuanian name was not prohibited but we are talking about Nazi cachet which usually Germanizes every place name. It is possible that the cachet was made before the renaming process but still...Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-80207961761397673842016-09-22T16:51:00.000+09:002016-09-22T16:51:32.575+09:00Vilnius 1941 - Postcard of Trakai

This is a postcard of Troki (now Trakai, Lithuania) sent in 1941 from Vilnius, part of German occupied Ostland to Riga, which was also part of the same territory. It has a nice simple single Hindenburg stamp franking with a postmark of Vilnius C. dated 14 XI 1941. As I've already mentioned in the past in this blog, regular Reich stamps were also valid along with the Ostland overprinted stamps. It looks like the text is written in Russian and the slightly visible trace of red ink on the upper left corner of the stamp is probably hand stamped censorship mark. It is interesting that Polish postcards with Polish inscriptions are still available for the local market considering the place was under German occupation which often replaced anything printed in the local language by their own productions.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-73480808061135032992016-09-17T17:30:00.000+09:002016-09-17T17:30:12.476+09:00Vilnius 1940

This is a registered cover sent in 1940 from Vilnius 4 during the Soviet occupation period to the Swiss capital Bern. It has a nice arrival cancel of Bern on the back. It even has a letter inside still but unfortunately my Polish sucks therefore I'm unable to tell you guys what is it written about... Given the fact that the Soviet took Vilnius by force from the Poles, I can imagine that the Polish author of this letter (it's obvious from his Polish name and the Polish text) didn't just write a "what's up dude"-kinda letter but rather a serious one. The interesting part is that he wrote his address as "Vilnius, Latvia", which makes it look like he probably isn't from Vilnius/Wilno originally. It is indeed pretty confusing for those who is not familiar with Lithuania's name in other languages, Most worldwide stamp collectors probably know that Lietuva is the Lithuanian name for Lithuania as you can see on their postage stamps but it sounds and looks closer to Latvia than Lithuania. I actually don't know why is it called Lithuania in English...
I have few Gryżewski covers and this one is my personal favorite. It is a philatelic cover sent in 1939 from Wilno 2 to Warszawa (Warsaw) with a special postmark commemorating the 20th anniversary of Polish air links. According to B. Brzozowski's "The Vilnius Directorate of Post and Telegraph between 1919 and 1939", the illustration part and the date part of the postmark is separated but on my copy, it looks like a single ensemble or even a machine cancel of some sort.
This is a full set of the Soviet souvenir sheets commemorating the 100 years of Russian postage stamp, cancelled in Клайпеда / Klaipėda, Lithuania SSR. Both souvenir sheets still have gum on the back which tell us that all the postmarks on them are actually CTOs most probably privately ordered since there wasn't any commercial mass production of CTO in Klaipėda as far as I know.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-2961563519570871842016-06-22T20:23:00.000+09:002016-06-29T12:44:09.667+09:00Šilutė 1870

This is a postal stationery of the North German Confederation / Norddeutscher Postbezirk sent in 1870 from Heydekrug (now Šilutė, Lithuania) to Kinten (now Kintai, Lithuania), both located in Memelland. Actually "Norddeutscher Postbezirk" is the name for the postal area of the North German Confederation and not the state itself (it is officially: Norddeutscher Bund). Memelland was part of the Kingdom of Prussia which formed the Confederation in 1866 issuing their own stamps until 1870 before becoming the German Reich when the remaining southern Germanic states joined as well.
Heydekrug was the second largest town in Memelland and it has an interesting origin. According to Wikipedia, a guy named Georg Tallat purchased an inn together with the land and the fishing rights in 1511. "Heide" meaning: heathland and "Krug" meaning: inn, combining together in one word: Heydekrug.
This is an airmail cover of the Hotel Metropolis sent in 1935 from Kaunas to London. This Hotel Metropolis was the most prestigious hotel in Lithuania during the interwar period, where most of the important guests stayed. It has been nationalized in 1922, served many celebrities and state guests from Marc Chagall to Chiune Sugihara. The hotel is still operating today (but not "prestigious" as it used to be back then, at least when I've stayed there myself in 2005) at the exact same building which you can see on the cover hotel logo illustration.
Interestingly, the cover is addressed to a ship captain but sent to the office that owns the ship rather than the ship itself. The was no direct flight from Kaunas to London at that time I guess, so you see a transit postmark of Berlin Zentralflughafen / Central airport on the back of the cover.
The Japanese consul Chiune Sugihara / 杉原千畝 famous for issuing life saving visas to the Jewish people during WWII, spent his final days in Lithuania here. He stayed at Hotel Metropolis after the Japanese consulate was forcibly closed down by the occupying Soviet authority, continued issuing visas in the hotel room. Many witnesses stated that he even wrote visas at the Kaunas railway station platform when he was leaving Lithuania (and coincidentally, the postmark of this cover is Kaunas railway station!). Today you can see 2 commemorative plates to honor this event, one at Kaunas railway station and the other one at Hotel Metropolis.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-55765555392470446002016-05-24T13:36:00.000+09:002016-05-25T06:16:03.498+09:00Vilnius 1917

This is a postcard sent in 1917 from Wilna (now Vilnius, Lithuania) under the German occupation to Pfafstatt bei Mülhausen in Elsass, now in Alsace, France. It has a nice cachet of the Soldatenheim - Wilna, a recreational establishment for the soldiers, where the card has been sent from. It also has the address on it: Georgstrasse 9 which is the present Gedimino Prospektas. The German name "Georgstrasse", George street. probably comes from the St. George church located right behind the Lithuanian writers' Union building on Gedimino Prospektas.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-75071192582477040592016-05-20T09:21:00.000+09:002016-05-20T09:21:10.205+09:00Vilnius 1923

This is a cover sent in 1923 from Wilno (now Vilnius, Lithuania) to Genève, Suisse, the French spelling for Geneva, Switzerland. Personally speaking, I find this block of 10 stamps of 10 Polish Marks very attractive. Poland in 1923 was in the middle of the hyperinflation and you will often see covers with multiple of stamps on it.
The sender have written the return address as "Vilna", again this is the French spelling for Vilnius, most probably coming from the Russian name of the city.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-87716213160778042242016-05-07T17:35:00.001+09:002016-05-07T17:36:48.246+09:00Recent Acquisitions

Well, unfortunately it is a damaged stamp... but I have my reason why I do keep this stamp preciously in my album. This stamp has a 1937 polish T.P.O. postmark of the line Druja (now Друя / Druya, Belarus) - Dukszty (now Dūkštas, Lithuania)! I have few books and documents talking about Polish railway post that operated in Vilnius region but none of them mention about this Druja - Dukszty line for some reason which I have absolutely no clue. According to the list of Polish railway post line, the line Druja - Dukszty existed and the number was 491 which supposed to be shown on the bottom of the postmark (it is missing on my copy). Philatelically speaking, that's about all the information I've got so far.
This narrow gauge line linked Dukszty / Dūkštas and Druja, the northernmost Polish railway station ever existed in Polish history, via Браслаў /Brasław (Breslauja in Lithuanian), the most populated town along this railway line. Originally, it has been built by the German during WWI which the Poles took over and converted to a 750mm narrow gauge line. There were some interruptions during WWII but the line was used until the late 1960's during the Soviet rule.
This is a cover sent in 1930 by the railway post (Pašto vagonas) line Klaipėda - Šiauliai to Berlin, Germany. Unfortunately I don't know where is it sent from because the sender have not written any return address. 30 centas was the postal rate for the domestic letter but this rate also applied to Germany, Latvia and Estonia. To other countries, is was 60 centas.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-20767788606117463612016-04-19T18:24:00.002+09:002016-04-29T09:23:37.386+09:00Riga-Kybartai Railway post 1928 - Postcard of Dainų šventė in Kaunas 1924

This is postcard send in 1928 by the railway post Ryga (Lithuanian spelling for Riga, the Latvian capital city) - Kybartai from Kėdainiai to France. It is a real picture postcard and shows the Lithuanian traditional song festival called Dainų šventė. The one on the picture is the first one held in Kaunas in 1924, the Lithuanian version of Wikipedia for the entry "Dainų šventė" shows a picture of the same event taken from a slightly different angle.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-58817951304783684252016-02-10T16:40:00.000+09:002016-02-10T16:40:34.342+09:00Cancellations of Lit.SSR - 10

Along with the Paberžė cancelled stamps I have posted last time, I have got these Vilnius ones as well so I thought I might as well post them. The top one was cancelled on January 1941, still under Soviet control, and the one on the bottom was cancelled in Vilnius as well on August 1941 when the German occupation has already started there. Definitive stamps can sometime be really interesting to collect!Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-55776006112001747302016-01-28T12:26:00.002+09:002016-07-28T01:02:58.687+09:00Paberžė 1941

Here are some stamps with a 1941 Vilnius overprint with a cancel of Paberžė dated July 24 1941 which was already under German occupation. Paberžė is a small town in Vilnius county, with a population of 900 according to the 2011 census, located just 35km north of Vilnius itself. Mint 1941 Vilnius overprinted stamps are not rare stamps but somehow used examples are more difficult to catch which contradicts their relatively low catalog value. These overprints were supposed to be valid in Vilnius region, but I haven't read or heard any book nor article defining its precise boundary of validity. Well, so far, in Paberžė, it was valid, we know that now lol. I'm almost positive that these Paberžė cancels are CTO because I have seen similar Paberžė canceled items (with much more higher CV than mines though...) on Ebay and Delcampe with a proper certificate of authenticity (mines are signed Bender on the back by the way).Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-36504184938292674092016-01-20T23:23:00.000+09:002016-01-20T23:23:13.624+09:00Vilnius 1926

This is a postcard sent in 1926 from Wilno (now Vilnius, Lithuania) to Dordrecht, Netherlands. The picture shows the church of the Holy Trinity of the Basilian Monastery taken by the photographer Jan Bułhak. The card has not been franked for the regular postcard postal tariff but as "Druki", meaning "printed matter" in Polish.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-37763347668287227242016-01-19T14:27:00.000+09:002016-01-19T14:27:39.613+09:00Šaukėnai 1931

This is a registered mail sent in 1931 from Šaukėnai to the district court in Šiauliai (Šiaulių apygardos teismas). It looks like there were some kind of legal documents. Šaukėnai is a small town in Šiauliai County with a population of little over 700. This is an Imperial Russian postal stationery with a railway post cancel of 1912, line 86 between Муравьево / Muravjevo (now Mažeikiai, Lithuania) and Riga which was also a part of Russia at that time. The destination of the card is Альт-Ауц / Alt-Autz, a German place name spelled in Russian alphabet. It sounds a bit weird but it was perfectly normal because the gubernia of Kurland was German speaking despite being part of the Russian Empire. The town of Альт-Ауц / Alt-Autz is today simply called Auce, part of Latvia, just 5 km from the Lithuanian border and 25 km north east of Mažeikiai. I had been curious if "Neu-Autz" exists. If "Alt-" does, why not the "Neu-", and yes! it does actually. Wikipedia tells me it is Jaunauce which is literally the "New Auce", located just 4 km west of Auce.Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-576865666405023237.post-90410964565597638692015-11-29T20:38:00.001+09:002015-11-29T20:38:06.523+09:00Klaipėda 1941

This is a real nice postal stationery featuring an image of Memel (now Klaipėda, Lithuania) issued in 1941 as a part of a big series of beautiful places in the Third Reich. Memel is described as the northernmost city of Greater Germany in the text. It just makes me wonder where is the present northernmost city of Germany...
From my opinion, it would have been a perfect card if there wasn't the head of Hitler on the corner... Well, it's history, what can I do...Prahanoakihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16897880703695769306noreply@blogger.com0
