Švenčionys 1916

This is a postcard of Swenzian/Święciany (now Švenčionys, Lithuania) sent in 1910 from the German Field post (Feldpost) station 210 located in Švenčionys itself, to Melz, Germany, a tiny village in Mecklenburg region. The Orthodox church shown on the picture is the famous Švenčionių Švč. Trejybės cerkvė/Holy Trinity Church of Švenčionys which still stands today.

  1. It is very interesting the destination: Metz.
At that time - more precisely from 1871 up to 1918 - Metz was a town of the German Empire. After the Second World War it returned to France.

    1. Do you think it's Metz? I thought Melz. This writer writes the letter "T" like a number "4". Im not sure..

    2. In my opinion it is Metz. Look at the street after the name of the town. Il is
      Mazellenstr. 64
Look at "D5" in this old map of German-Metz

It is "Rue Mazelle" in Metz today here .

Melz instead is really a small village and there is only 1 street ("Dorfstr.") even not arriving at the number 64 :-)
Look at the Google map here .

      All the best.

    1. I totally agree with you, this church is one of the jewel of architecture in Lithuania! I have never been in Švenčionys myself but I thought the church is well preserved. Maybe the interior is not preserved as well and needs to be restored?
