Marijampolė 1979
A commemorative cover of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Akelaitis, cancelled in Kapsukas/Капсукас (now Marijampolė, Lithuania) in 1979. The stamp is also a commemorative stamp of 400th anniversary of Vilnius university issued in 1979. Marijampolė was named Kapsukas/Капсукас between 1955 and 1989 in honor of Vincas Kapsukas. The cancellation is the one of Kapsukas/Капсукас post office #3 which was closed down soon after the restauration of independence of Lithuania. Presently, only the central post office (Marijampolės centrinis paštas/Marijampolė-C), #2(2-asis paštas) and #4 are in service in Marijampolė.

In common with Marijampolė/Kapsukas, there is also a town in Estonia that had been its name changed during the Soviet period. It is the town of Kuressaare, called Kingissepa between 1952 and 1988 in honour of a Bolshevik who had been born there.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting Gio Ve. Kuressaare had also a german name, right? It is very interesting to see the name of city changing in the course of history.
